Minimalistic in design, yet versatile in its applications – the LED pendant luminaire, designed by Theophil Eichler and Ulrich Sattler, received the 2018 Red Dot Winner Label. The luminaire emits both direct and indirect light and can be fitted with an acoustic set, which allows for harmonious and integral light-acoustics solutions.

The jurors were impressed by the luminaire’s high quality of detail and its aesthetic appeal. The 39 design experts who assessed a total of 6,300 designs from 59 countries found the pendant luminaire series “formally and functionally thought out – down to the last detail and characterized by a strong visual presence“. For the luminaire developers, a harmonious design was of utmost importance. They created five Gioco variants based on the geometry of the golden ratio. The consistency of proportions makes all variants completeley harmonious in design. Theophil Eichler and Ulrich Sattler explain as follows, “The consistent application of this principle allows for any combination of the Gioco components. Different sizes, square or rectangular in shape: The luminaire composition always results in an overall harmonious structure.“

Gioco is available in brushed aluminium and anodised in different colour shades, for example a warm champagne gold and a timeless elegant silver. It can be used individually, e.g. above a desk or conference table, but also in combination with several square or rectangular variants, which can be supspended from different heights. The luminaire can unfold its full aesthetic effect by the use of unobtrusive current-carrying cables. Combined in groups, the spatial presence of the exquisite luminaire intensifies.

The Gioco luminaire series is special in the SATTLER luminaire range, which until recently has focused on multiple variants of the circular shape. When designing Gioco, Ulrich Sattler collaborated with Theophil Eichler for the first time. Theophil Eichler is a master carpenter, interior and object designer, and transfers his high demands on perfection and precision to the product design. Together with Ulrich Sattler, he had the idea of creating a square-shaped design and basing it on the system concept. “Both of us wanted to derive as much as possible from the basic concept“, says Theophil Eichler.

Premiered at the Light + Building Exhibition in spring 2018, the Gioco luminaire is already available for sale. It is currently included in various international architectural projects. Furthermore, the Gioco luminaire will be displayed in the “Design on Stage“ exhibition of the Red Dot Design Museum (Zeche Zollverein Essen) until 5 August.
